Matthew Blunt – Tuba

Matthew started his musical education at the age of 6, learning piano. He took up the tuba when he was 10 years old, and after a year he started learning with Sean O’Neill (Welsh National Opera) at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. During his teenage years he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra, before studying full time at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. He attended the Royal Academy of Music for undergraduate degree starting in 2009, with a full scholarship.

Matthew has won many awards since he started playing tuba, winning local music competitions when young, becoming the Bournemouth Young Musician of the Year in 2007, he has a Grade 8 certificate in piano, an LRSM in tuba performance, won awards when he was at the RWCMD for his brass playing.

Matthew’s recording career is quite full, as he has recorded music for BBC documentaries, played on a CD by Huw Stephen’s (BBC Radio 1 DJ), as well as recorded with Nick Mason (Pink Floyd’s drummer). He has played on many live  BBC Radio 3 performances, including 6 promenade concerts, and has performed with Elton John on ITV, BBC and the iTunes festival. In 2012, he auditioned for the European Union Youth Orchestra, and remained a member there until 2013, when he became the current principal tuba of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Freelance work includes working with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
